LABUHANBATU SELATAN, HALOSUMUT.COM – In a strategic and highly commendable effort to strengthen regional identity and preserve the immense wealth of Nusantara’s traditions, the progressive community of Sungai Kanan District is actively gearing up to welcome a grand cultural manifestation titled the “Sungai Kanan Labusel Cultural Festival.”
This eagerly awaited event is officially scheduled to take place at the end of this week, precisely on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
This grand cultural festival, which firmly carries the noble mission of reinforcing local traditional roots, will be heavily centered at the Courtyard of the Sungai Kanan District Chief’s Office (Kantor Camat) in Labuhanbatu Selatan.
The activities are scheduled to promptly commence at 20.00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) and are projected to be attended by hundreds of prominent community leaders, dedicated art activists, youth organizations, and enthusiastic citizens traveling from various corners of the region.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Faiz Akhwaji Siregar, officially stated that the event preparations have been running exceptionally smooth and mature so far, thanks to the tireless hard work of the entire committee and the continuous support from various strategic elements.
To further enliven and ensure the success of the celebration, the committee has formally distributed official invitations to various essential organizations across the Labusel region, which crucially includes the ranks of the Alumni Association of the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (IKA PMII) of Labuhanbatu Selatan Regency.
“It is a tremendous honor and a source of great happiness for us if all elements of society, youth, and regional leaders would kindly grace us with their presence to provide their valuable support and directly witness the diverse charms of cultural heritage that will be exquisitely showcased,” the organizing committee stated firmly in their official press release.
Taking this initiative to an elite level, this local cultural exhibition has successfully garnered full attention and comprehensive support at the national government tier. The festival is being organized through a highly synergistic collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Dana Indonesiana, and the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP).
The active involvement of these prestigious national institutions strongly emphasizes the vital importance of local cultural preservation as an inseparable component of national cultural resilience.
In addition to the extensive government backing, this monumental celebration is robustly supported by various local commercial and creative partners, such as Raja Bordir dan Sablon, Sumatera Teropong Indonesia, and Syahuma Design.
The active presence of these strategic partners beautifully demonstrates a solid, unbreakable collaboration involving the public sector, creative grassroots communities, and local business actors in driving regional cultural agendas to absolute success.

The upcoming Sungai Kanan Cultural Festival marks a historic milestone for Labuhanbatu Selatan (Labusel), as it represents one of the first major regional cultural events to receive direct funding and structural endorsement from the newly independent Ministry of Culture alongside the national Dana Indonesiana scheme.
This national financial injection underscores the central government’s progressive focus on mapping and revitalizing cultural expressions outside of mainstream urban hubs.
Sungai Kanan, historically a melting pot of unique Southern Batak, Mandailing, and Malay cultural sub-dialects, possesses an incredibly rich but under-documented oral history and performing arts heritage.
Local organizers intend to use this festival as a launchpad to map out long-term regional tourism opportunities and revive traditional performing arts that have started to fade due to digital modernization.
By bringing together corporate elements, local MSMEs like Syahuma Design, and youth movements such as PMII, Labusel is positioning itself as a rising beacon for community-based cultural preservation in the southern economic corridor of North Sumatra.
Regional officials hope that this weekend’s event will lay the groundwork for an annual tourism calendar that can attract national and international ethnographers alike.
