KARO – The Karo Regency Government has officially begun preparations for the 2026 Simultaneous Village Head Elections (Pilkades) as the terms of office for 18 village heads across 10 districts are scheduled to end in December 2026.

The upcoming elections are expected to become one of the most significant local democratic events in the regency, allowing residents to elect new village leaders who will guide rural development over the next administration period.

Local authorities have confirmed that preparations are already underway to ensure the electoral process proceeds in accordance with national regulations.

Election Preparations Underway

Head of the Karo Regency Community and Village Empowerment Office (PMD), Asmona Perangin-angin, SH, stated that his office is currently finalizing the election stages and implementation schedule.

According to him, the preparations are being developed in accordance with Law No. 6 of 2014 concerning Villages and the latest amendments under Law No. 16 of 2025.

Once the planning process is completed, the Karo Regent is expected to issue a Regent Regulation (Peraturan Bupati) that will serve as the legal basis for conducting the simultaneous election of the 18 village heads.

The regulation will outline the official election procedures, implementation schedule, and administrative requirements for candidates.

Official Schedule Expected in Early July

Authorities indicated that the complete election timeline and registration stages are likely to be announced in early July 2026.

The publication will provide detailed information regarding:

  • Candidate registration periods
  • Administrative verification
  • Campaign regulations
  • Voting schedules
  • Election procedures
  • Announcement of official candidates

Residents interested in running for village head are encouraged to begin preparing the required documentation and ensure they meet all eligibility criteria established under applicable regulations.

Eighteen Villages to Hold Simultaneous Elections

The simultaneous Pilkades will take place in the following villages:

Simpang Empat District

  • Nang Belawan Village

Berastagi District

  • Lau Gumba Village

Kutabuluh District

  • Pola Tebu Village

Naman Teran District

  • Pernantin Village
  • Kidupen Village
  • Juhar Ginting Sada Nioga Village

The elections will be conducted simultaneously to improve administrative efficiency while ensuring equal implementation across participating villages.

Village Leadership Plays a Strategic Role

Village heads serve as key public officials responsible for overseeing local governance, managing village development funds, implementing community programs, and improving public services.

They also coordinate infrastructure development, economic empowerment initiatives, agricultural programs, social assistance, and community participation.

Because of these responsibilities, village head elections are often regarded as one of the most important democratic processes at the grassroots level.

Why Simultaneous Village Elections Matter

Holding simultaneous elections offers several advantages for local governments.

Election experts note that organizing multiple village elections at the same time can:

  • Improve administrative efficiency
  • Reduce implementation costs
  • Simplify election supervision
  • Strengthen regulatory consistency
  • Increase public participation through coordinated voter education

At the same time, synchronized elections help ensure that newly elected village leaders begin their terms under a unified governance schedule.

Candidate Preparation Begins Early

Although official candidate registration has not yet opened, prospective candidates are already being encouraged to familiarize themselves with the legal requirements.

Potential candidates should prepare administrative documents, understand electoral regulations, and engage constructively with their communities while awaiting the official announcement.

Observers note that early preparation often helps candidates navigate the nomination process more effectively once registration begins.

Village Development Remains a Priority

The upcoming elections are expected to shape the future direction of rural development in Karo Regency.

Village governments play an essential role in implementing national development programs while addressing local priorities such as:

  • Agricultural development
  • Rural infrastructure
  • Education support
  • Healthcare access
  • Community empowerment
  • Environmental sustainability

Strong village leadership is considered vital for maximizing the benefits of village funding and improving residents’ quality of life.

Public Participation Encouraged

Local officials are encouraging residents to actively participate throughout the election process.

Community involvement is viewed as an important component of transparent and accountable village governance.

Authorities also hope the elections will strengthen democratic values while promoting peaceful competition among prospective candidates.

Looking Ahead

With the official election schedule expected in early July, preparations for Karo Regency’s 2026 simultaneous village head elections are entering an important phase.

The issuance of the Regent Regulation will provide the legal framework needed to organize the elections across 18 villages in 10 districts.

As communities prepare to elect new leaders, the elections are expected to contribute to stronger local governance, improved public services, and sustainable rural development throughout Karo Regency.
