HALOSUMUT.COM, NORTH SUMATRA – The relentless crackdown on illicit narcotics distribution along the major transit routes of North Sumatra continues to intensify.
The Padangsidimpuan Police Narcotics Unit has successfully apprehended a 53-year-old man who was caught red-handed transporting a significant amount of illicit drugs.
The high-profile arrest took place directly on the Sumatra Highway (Jalinsum), a notorious transit corridor often exploited by drug trafficking networks operating across the region.
During the targeted operation, law enforcement officers intercepted the suspect and discovered approximately 900 grams of dried marijuana in his possession. The narcotics were found meticulously packed and wrapped inside a plastic package, clearly prepared for further distribution.
Following the tactical arrest, the suspect, along with the seized evidence, was immediately transported to the Padangsidimpuan Police Headquarters for an intensive investigation to trace the origin of the supply network.
Padangsidimpuan Police Chief, through the Head of the Narcotics Unit, emphasized that this operation was heavily initiated due to timely and actionable intelligence provided by concerned local residents.
Citizens had reported highly suspicious movements along the specific Jalinsum stretch, prompting undercover narcotics officers to quickly set up a surveillance perimeter.
Police are currently interrogating the suspect to determine whether he belongs to a larger inter-city drug syndicate operating between North Sumatra and neighboring provinces.
In North Sumatra, the illicit trafficking of marijuana remains a major security challenge, with syndicates frequently utilizing public transport and major highways like Jalinsum to smuggle contraband from major cultivation areas.
Local authorities have vowed to increase random checkpoints and strengthen community policing to intercept these distribution chains before they reach urban youth centers.
The suspect is expected to face severe charges under the Indonesian Narcotics Law No. 35/2009, which carries heavy prison sentences or potential life imprisonment for high-volume possession.
As the legal proceedings begin to unfold, the Padangsidimpuan Police department highly commends the active participation of the public in maintaining regional security.
Law enforcement officials reiterate that community-led intelligence remains the most lethal weapon against the expansion of drug networks in North Sumatra.
The local government and police forces are urged to maintain this momentum to ensure that Padangsidimpuan and its surrounding transit highways remain hostile ground for drug traffickers.
