LABUHANBATU SELATAN, HALOSUMUT.COM – Guided by a profound devotion to safeguarding their sacred ancestors’ heritage and communal harmony, the passionate residents of Sampean Barat Hamlet, Sampean Village, Sungai Kanan District, Labuhanbatu Selatan Regency, recently united in a major collective action.

Hand in hand, the local community actively worked together to expedite the completion of their village mosque’s structural construction.

This highly commendable collective initiative is deeply driven by the spiritual essence of the Tulak Bala (warding off misfortune) tradition.

For generation after generation, this cultural ritual has served as a powerful pillar for local residents to invoke safety, protection, and boundless divine blessings from the Almighty Creator, while keeping the community safe from various earthly disasters.

Through the closely held spirit of gotong royong (mutual cooperation), which remains a shining characteristic of North Sumatran community life, people of all age groups—ranging from dedicated village youth to respected elders—willingly stepped forward to participate.

They contributed their physical labor, time, and materials to ensure that the sacred center of worship could function fully in the near future.

The local project coordinator firmly explained that this collective action serves as an authentic manifestation of how cultural preservation can perfectly align with spiritual infrastructure development. By building the house of Allah together, the community believes they are reinforcing a spiritual shield over their entire village area.

“The Tulak Bala tradition taught us that true protection against misfortune lies in deep spiritual devotion and unshakable communal unity. Completing this beautiful mosque is our collective way of living out those ancestral values in modern times,” a local community leader stated during the activity.

Through this massive community synergy, the construction committee highly expects that the remaining phases of the mosque project can be smoothly finalized without major financial or structural delays. This will ultimately provide the grassroots population with a proper and highly comfortable environment for collective prayers and religious gatherings.

Sampean Barat Hamlet, located within the southern landscape of Labuhanbatu Selatan (Labusel), is highly recognized for its deep-rooted cultural values and close-knit social ties.

The Tulak Bala tradition, which generally involves collective prayers, Islamic chanting (dhikr), and community cleaning activities, has transitioned over the years from a purely ritualistic custom into an active driver for public infrastructure development. By turning a traditional ritual into a practical movement to build a house of worship, the residents showcase a brilliant model of self-reliance and community-led development.

Historically, villages in the Sungai Kanan District have often relied on independent community fundraising (swadaya) to establish and maintain their public facilities due to geographical distances from urban centers.

This collective mosque project highlights how Islamic values and local traditional heritage can work together to foster a sustainable social ecosystem.

Local authorities have highly praised the initiative, hoping it will inspire other hamlets across the Labuhanbatu Selatan region to safeguard their cultural heritage while independently improving village infrastructure.
